Cubans in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines pay tribute to José Martí on the 173rd Anniversary of his birth

Kingstown, January 29, 2026 — In the year marking the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, Cubans residing in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, local authorities, Cuban collaborators, members of the SVG–Cuba Friendship Association, and representatives of the diplomatic mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela paid tribute to José Martí, National Hero of Cuba, on the occasion of the 173rd anniversary of his birth.

The commemoration took place in an atmosphere of deep respect and commitment to Martí’s legacy, highlighting the enduring relevance of his thought and example for present and future generations. During the event, attendees enjoyed the screening of the Cuban film “El Mayor”, by renowned Cuban filmmaker Rigoberto López, a work that evokes key episodes of Cuba’s independence struggles and the values that sustained them.

In his remarks, the Ambassador of Cuba to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Carlos Ernesto Rodríguez Etcheverry, recalled José Martí’s outstanding role in Cuba’s independence process, his ethical and humanist vision of politics, and his tireless efforts to promote unity among patriots and the building of a republic “with all and for the good of all.” The Ambassador also underscored the close link between Martí’s ideas and the thought and legacy of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, highlighting the historical continuity between both leaders in the defense of sovereignty, social justice, and the dignity of peoples.

The event reaffirmed the bonds of friendship and solidarity between Cuba and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as the commitment to keep José Martí’s legacy alive as a moral and political guide in the struggle for a more just and united world (Cuban Embassy to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines/Cubaminrex).
