Cuba’s Educational Brigade Coordinator in South Africa offered a lecture on the Literacy Campaign in Cuba.

The affiliate of the Friends of Cuba Society (FOCUS) in the city of Cape Town, organized an event dedicated to the literacy campaign of Cuba, as part of the activities carried out with the aim of expanding knowledge about the Cuban reality.

At the event, a film debate revolved around the documentary “Maestra”, by the director Catherine Murphy, which retells the story of 8 women who joined the literacy brigades. Coordinator of the Cuban educational mission in South Africa, Professor Yadileydi Hernández Collot, who addressed the background and significance of this Campaign as the basis of the present Cuban education system that today has positive indicators of quality was the moderator of the debate.

The Cuban educator also approached the aspects observed in the documentary that most grabbed the audience’s attention, among them, the young age of the literacy campaigners and the aggressiveness of the counterrevolutionary bands that threatened and even killed young volunteers of this program , acting with financing and support of the US imperialism.

Professor Yadileidi Hernádez also made a presentation on the current Cuban educational system and international cooperation in the field of education that Cuba is performing in various countries, also with excellent results.

FOCUS members, the general population as well as representatives of the Ministry of Education in that province participated in the event.
