Remembering the heroic fighter guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara

Letter to the reader from Rubén Pino Martínez, Ambassador of Cuba to Cyprus.

Fifty-nine years ago, on October 8, 1967, Commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara was wounded and captured in the Quebrada del Yuro in Bolivia. There he fought his last battle, and there, behind a rock that still bears the marks of countless bullets, endure the memories of what was his emancipatory project for Latin America and, also, his example for immortality.

In these times, which point toward chaos and the despair of a world increasingly globalized by stubbornness, the pursuit of war, selfishness and limitless consumerism, Che's example uplifts us.

It is a world order that relentlessly imposes codes and values which, day after day, tend to mutilate the very reproduction of our "species"; where the lack of solidarity, poverty of spirit and real poverty take away, every second, the full and dignified stability of every human being on earth.

Amid so many setbacks and bitter experiences, campaigns and slanders, blockades and aggressions, Cuba lives, its Revolution grows, and its people also suffer.

It is not enough that we make our own, and keep always alive, the greatness and principles of a heroic guerrilla fighter who will accompany us, fortunately, "Hasta la Victoria Siempre"; it is not enough that millions of Cubans are determined to chart their own path and have decided to share their fate with other poor people of the earth in exchange for nothing, out of respect for an ideal. And although we are not alone, it is not enough.

We have friends who dispel myths and slander with their truth about Cuba.

Among so many unnamed others, the truth about Cuba is spread by hundreds of thousands of men and women, friendly voices in every corner of the world whose work, oratory, music or poetry help the example of the Heroic Guerrilla Fighter and of Cuba grow and rise ever higher.

Our José Martí wrote that "poetry, which brings together or scatters, which strengthens or distresses, which props up or topples arms, which gives or takes away from men their faith and spirit, is more necessary to peoples than industry itself, for industry provides them with the means to subsist, while poetry gives them the desire and strength for life."

With the simplicity and humility of our pen, let us remember Che today and always. ¡Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

Rubén Pino Martínez,

Ambassador of Cuba to Cyprus.
