Academics, diplomats, officials, students and lawmakers from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Europe, participating in the International Seminar on Parliamentary Diplomacy, which took place on September 18 and 19, 2024, in Havana, Cuba, have widely debated the role of parliamentarians in strengthening international law, promoting the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and building a better, fairer, more democratic and peaceful world. Also, how we can work together more effectively, based on solidarity and international cooperation, to address the most pressing contemporary challenges.
We have reaffirmed unwavering respect for the principles of International Law, the promotion, preservation and strengthening of multilateralism, the need to create a just and equitable world order; the urgent need for the democratization of international relations; and the importance of promoting and safeguarding international peace and security as well as the peaceful settlement of international disputes.
We also exchanged perspectives on finding shared theoretical, conceptual and practical solutions to the challenges to global development, based on common but differentiated responsibilities; eliminating inequality and hunger; ensuring food security in the pursuit of sustainable development; tackling the challenges of climate change for survival, human development and the planet; as well as on the challenges facing parliamentary diplomacy, the role of parliamentary activity in the promotion and protection of all human rights, and the participation of women in parliamentary diplomacy.
The participants in this Seminar reaffirm the value of the exercise of parliamentary diplomacy in the service of peace, the well-being of our peoples, human rights and development, while calling on parliamentarians worldwide to advocate for absolute respect for the internal affairs of States and their sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for an end to illegal blockades, threats, use of force, arbitrary lists, so-called certifications and the coercitive measures contrary to the international law.
