GENEVA. December 8, 2017. On Sunday, December 10, all Cubans will have enough reasons to celebrate Human Rights Day. More than five decades of socialist revolution have allowed them to achieve the full and universal enjoyment of all human rights, so there are plenty of reasons to celebrate with joy that day.
There are many challenges facing the world today, in which the rights to justice and peace are systematically violated. That is why it is a matter of pride to be among the countries whose governments have done everything in their power to achieve the broadest enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all their citizens and to help other countries of the developing world also reach those goals.
Cuba is internationally recognized for the progress made in consolidating its health and education system free of charge and available to all, the struggle for gender equality, protection of the environment, among many others. The solidarity and selfless work of the Cuban health collaborators have saved the life or returned the vision to hundreds of thousands of people in the world.
All this has been achieved despite the genocidal policy of economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba, and which represents not only a breach of International Law, but a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of the human rights of Cubans.
As for the international arena, Cuba has a long history of cooperation with all human rights mechanisms that are applied on a universal and non-discriminatory basis. As a Member State of the UN Human Rights Council, the country maintains an active role, materialized in the presentation of resolutions aimed at defending fundamental basic rights, which demonstrates its firm commitment to the implementation of a more just and equitable human rights system.
Cuba will continue its fight against all forms of injustice in the world and to achieve a true worthiness and well-being of humanity. Inspired by the ideals of the Historical Leader of the Revolution, Cubans will continue to defend their rights to self-determination, development, peace and a just, democratic and equitable international order, knowing that a better world is and must be possible.
