Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations takes part in a virtual meeting of the Solidarity Campaign in the United Kingdom

London, June 30, 2021- The Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ana Silvia González Abascal, participated today in a virtual meeting organized by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) in the United Kingdom to exchange information on the result of the June 23 vote on the Cuban resolution Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.

The Cuban diplomat referred to Cuba's overwhelming victory at the UN with 184 votes in favour and only 2 against. González emphasized the effects of the blockade, whose worsening with the adoption of more than 240 measures by the Trump administration (50 of them in the context of Covid-19), hinders access to medicines and medical equipment for the confrontation to the pandemic. The diplomat also acknowledged the extraterritorial impact of this unfair policy, with incidence on Cuba-United Kingdom relations.

For his part, the director of CSC, Rob Miller, ratified the support to Cuba in its fight to lift the blockade, while reiterating the commitment to carry out actions that contribute to this objective. Miller mentioned, among the recent initiatives conducted, the donation of funds for medical supplies and the motion presented to the British Parliament (Early Day Motion 1550) requesting Biden Administration to normalize relations with Cuba.

The Ambassador of Cuba to the United Kingdom, Bárbara Montalvo Álvarez, also took part in the meeting.

This event ends a  three-episode programme organized by the CSC under the title Breaking the blockade, which also included interviews with the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Pedro Luis Pedroso, and the acting Director-General for Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, María del Carmen Herrera.
