BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, arrived at around 7:00 p.m. this Sunday in the southern city of Buenos Aires to take part in the VII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), to be held on January 24.
At the "Ministro Pistarini" International Airport -more commonly known as Ezeiza-, the dignitary was received by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, Pablo Tettamanti.
From Cuba, shortly before his departure to the southern nation, the Head of State had shared a message with the Cuban people, in which he said: "In a few hours we will be in Argentina, the land of Che and the cradle of other great friends and brothers, of admired heroes, politicians, intellectuals, artists and sportsmen".
The dignitary spoke of the reason for Cuba's presence at the regional conclave: "We are coming because on January 24 the VII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, the indispensable CELAC, an integration mechanism that we have the duty and the opportunity to revitalize, will be held in the beloved Buenos Aires".
"We aspire -he emphasized- that unity in diversity, a key principle we share, will allow us to act as a solid regional family to promote and project Latin America and the Caribbean in the discussion of the global agenda."
Díaz-Canel announced that his return to the Island will be in time "to celebrate together the 170th anniversary of the Apostle and to resume the daily tasks, always challenging".
Cuba and Argentina established diplomatic relations on May 12, 1909, interrupted in 1962, when all the countries of the continent - with the exception of Mexico - broke their ties with the largest of the Antilles in Revolution. On May 28, 1973, those ties were resumed.
The delegation accompanying the Head of State is made up of the member of the Political Bureau and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla; the Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz; and the Cuban Ambassador to Argentina, Pedro Pablo Prada.
