Washington, D.C. – As part of the international commemorations marking the centenary of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, Ambassador Tanieris Diéguez La O, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Cuba in the United States, participated in the virtual town hall "Mother Africa's Children Day of Friendship, Good Will and Solidarity with the Cuban People," organized by African American organizations committed to strengthening friendship and solidarity with Cuba.
Representing the Embassy of Cuba in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Diéguez opened the meeting by thanking participants for their longstanding friendship and unwavering solidarity with the Cuban people, particularly at a time when Cuba continues to face the humanitarian consequences of the intensified U.S. economic, commercial, financial, and energy blockade.
During her remarks, Ambassador Diéguez highlighted the historic bonds that unite Cuba and the African American community, rooted in a shared African heritage and common struggles against colonialism, racism, and inequality. She also reflected on the legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, recalling his steadfast commitment to Africa, Cuba's solidarity with African liberation movements, and the enduring importance of international cooperation in areas such as healthcare and education.
The Deputy Chief of Mission also shared an update on the current situation facing the Cuban people, particularly the impact of recent measures that have further restricted fuel supplies, exacerbated electricity shortages, and affected access to food, medicines, medical equipment, and other essential goods. She reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to preserving universal access to healthcare, education, and social protection despite these challenges.
The meeting brought together representatives of African American organizations from across the United States, who reflected on decades of solidarity work in support of improved relations between Cuba and the United States and reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue, friendship, and cooperation with the Cuban people.
The Embassy of Cuba expressed its sincere appreciation to the organizers and participants for creating this valuable space for exchange and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to strengthen ties with the African American community through dialogue, mutual respect, and people-to-people engagement.
