Pretoria, November 25th, 2020.- The Embassy of Cuba in South Africa and the emblematic park-museum Freedom Park, sponsored an emotional day of activities in tribute to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, as part of the commemorations for the fourth anniversary of his physical departure.
A solemn ceremony in front of the "Wall of Names", a historic site where the name of the Commander-in-Chief is inscribed and of 2 289 Cuban internationalist martyrs who offered their lives in the liberation struggles on the African continent, began the activities.
Two Cuban internationalist fighters with outstanding trajectory in the struggles for the liberation of Angola, Antonio Jardines del Valle and Juan Pérez Aldana, placed a wreath with the name of Fidel and the colors of the Cuban flag.
In the museum's main gallery, the exhibition entitled "In memory of Fidel Castro" was inaugurated, made up of snapshots of photojournalists from the Prensa Latina (PL) agency, which highlight the figure of Fidel in different settings of the Cuban Revolution.
Representatives of the African National Congress, the Communist Party, the National Confederation of African Trade Unions, the Association of Solidarity with Cuba, the Association of Graduates in Cuba and the Cuban Ambassador in South Africa participated in the round table held on the legacy of the Commander-in-Chief.
The speakers recalled Fidel as the architect and main guide of the Cuban Revolution, the validity of his legacy in Africa and the international dimension of his ideology. Videos were shown with historical interventions by Fidel and the South African leader Nelson Madela in relation to the decisive Cuban aid to the liberation movements in Southern Africa and the defeat of the Apartheid regime.
The South African representatives highlighted the important help that the Cuban Contingent of Specialized Doctors Henry Reeve is presently providing in the fight against the COVID19 pandemic in South Africa and emphatically expressed their support to its nomination for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
Also participating in the commemorative activities were members of the Diplomatic Corps, local press, representatives of union organizations; as well as the members of the Cuban Embassy, representatives of the different cooperation brigades of the Island and Cubans residing in South Africa.
