Family Code: An opportunity to strengthen social dialogue

Havana, February 2nd.- As an inclusive text, which recognizes all families, all types of families that exist in Cuba, and the problems associated with their development, the First Secretary of the Committee recently described the Family Code Central of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

The president has affirmed that the popular consultation and the subsequent referendum are important political processes, since it is an emancipatory Code that solves problems that exist at the social level in the country. As part of these reflections, shared in the last session of the Council of Ministers, the President said that to summarize the document only for same-sex marriage is to simplify it, and highlighted the exalting aspects that comprise it, as well as its breadth, comprehensiveness, modernity, strength and contribution to Cuban society.

With this vision, the popular consultation began yesterday throughout the country. In Las Tunas, Martha Rodríguez Martínez, president of the Provincial Electoral Council, urged citizens not to let this moment pass, an expression of Cuban democracy, and to take advantage of the opportunity not only to contribute to the creation of a better Code, but also to strengthen social dialogue.

The representatives of the Electoral Council in the territory stressed that the participants will be able to make their proposals, which can be additions, modifications or eliminations, and they will be able to issue them orally or deliver them in writing. They added that the query is not designed to oppose criteria; it will be "to listen and advise, never to enter into discussion, and nothing will be put to the vote, only the proposals will be collected."

Some 800 lawyers will act as consultants, to listen and clarify any doubts. In addition, more than 60 supervisors and a higher number of collaborators, especially from student organizations, will ensure the quality and transparency of the exercise in this province.
