The recent joint operation between the FBI and Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior (MININT) to rescue a minor of U.S. nationality is a clear example that WHEN THERE IS UNDERSTANDING, COOPERATION IS POSSIBLE.
WHAT HAPPENED?
A couple from Utah (United States) was detained by Cuban authorities following a report from the FBI, which alerted them to the irregular transfer of a 10-year-old minor to Cuba without the consent of his parents, allegedly with the aim of subjecting him to a gender reassignment operation.
THIS IS HOW THE COOPERATION WORKED:
- It was NOT a unilateral intervention by the FBI on Cuban territory.
- The FBI submitted the report to Cuba through established official channels.
- Cuban authorities acted in accordance with the request.
- After locating the minor and those involved, Cuba notified U.S. authorities.
- The United States sent a plane to Cuba to pick up the minor and the detainees.
THIS IS NOT NEW: HISTORY OF CUBA–U.S. COOPERATION
If there were no policy of aggression and political boycott by the United States against Cuba, many more joint operations could take place in areas such as the fight against drug trafficking, terrorism, human trafficking, etc.
Examples of Cuban cooperation:
Event — Year
- Cuba provided the U.S. with information about assassination plots against President Ronald Reagan — 1984
- Extradition of aircraft hijackers (1973 Anti-Hijacking Agreement) — 1970s
- Extradition of fugitives from U.S. justice — Various cases
- Alerts to the U.S. Coast Guard about vessels trafficking drugs (more than 1,500 reports between 1990 and 2025) — Ongoing
- Seizure of more than 40 tons of drugs over 14 years destined for the U.S. market — 2010–2025
REALITY
Cuba has ALWAYS been willing to cooperate on security and justice matters. The obstacle is not Cuban willingness, but Washington’s hostile policy, which unilaterally breaks dialogue channels.
► How many lives could be saved, how many crimes could be prevented, and how many more children could be protected if normal relations existed between both countries?
CUBA DEMONSTRATES:
- Professionalism
- Willingness to cooperate
- Capacity to act with international responsibility
- Respect for diplomatic channels
Cooperation is possible when aggression ceases.
