The genuine democracy of a people who nominate their deputies

In a legitimate and democratic exercise, the candidacy of the 470 deputies to the Cuban Parliament was approved yesterday in the extraordinary sessions of the municipal assemblies of the People's Power, held throughout the country, informed María Consuelo Baeza Martín, president of the National Nominations Commission (CCN).

She detailed that after the assemblies, which counted with a 95% of attendance, the approved candidacy was composed of 221 base candidates -delegates of circumscription-, 135 provincial and 114 national, while of the total, 55.3% are women and 45.5% are blacks and mulattos.

She pointed out that 20 % are young people under 35 years of age; the average age is 46 years, and the sectors of General Education (7.7 %) and Higher Education (5.1 %); Health (6.6 %); Sports (2.6 %), Press (2.1 %), among others such as cooperatives-agriculture, new economic actors and defense stand out.

The President of the CCN stressed that, taking into account that the National Assembly of People's Power is the highest constituent and legislative body of the country, it demands that its members have a high level of education, which is why 95.3% of those proposed for deputies have a higher education level.

On the basis that the Cuban electoral system works with open candidacies, and as a further proof that the democracy that sustains it is solid, Baeza Martin announced that in the assemblies of the municipalities of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Vertientes, in the province of Camagüey, it was necessary to change the proposal of candidacy, because the delegates, using their rights conferred by the Electoral Law, did not agree with the proposals.

The President of the CCN pointed out that all candidates must be certified by the National Electoral Council, and added that, from today until March 24, they will begin the tours in their municipalities, to exchange directly with the voters they would represent, and who will exercise their right to vote in the March 26 elections.
