Dublin, June 21, 2018. The “Liberty Hall”, historical headquarters of the SIPTU union was the scene chosen for the realization of a fraternal meeting of Fernando Gonzalez Llort, Hero of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, with Irish personalities and organizations in solidarity with the Cuban Revolution.
After the welcome to Fernando offered by Ethel Buckley, Vice Secretary General of SIPTU, the independent Deputy Maureen OSullivan, who presided over the ceremony, took the floor and highlighted the satisfaction of those present to welcome Fernando in his double role as Hero and President ICAP and listen to him.
The Cuban Hero thanked those present for the invitation to visit Ireland, for the years of campaign to achieve their liberation and that of his four brothers, as well as for the years of battle to end the blockade and other dissimilar actions deployed in solidarity with the Cuban Revolution. Fernando informed the audience about the progress of the process of updating the Cuban economic model, the constitutional reform and the election of comrade Diaz-Canel as the new President of the Councils of State and of Ministers, all as a normal process of continuity and reaffirmation of our socialism.
Among the themes that aroused the interest of the audience were the Latin American situation and the need to reinforce solidarity with the Bolivarian revolution and all the progressive Latin American processes that confront the imperialist aggression and the regional oligarchy. Present was also the message of solidarity to the peoples of Palestine and Western Sahara.
There was a moment of special recognition to Dr. David Hickey, present at the event, for his life dedication to the cause of solidarity with Cuba. Also recognition to those people particularly involved in the cause of the liberation of the Cuban Five who, like the documentalist Bernie Dwyer, have died and did not have the privilege of welcoming Fernando in Dublin, but whose names and actions were very present in Liberty Hall.
Simon McGuinness, President of the "Cuba Support Group-Ireland" gave a brief account of the birth of the movement of solidarity with the Cuban Five Patriots, its expansion and development of activities to become an important movement that brought together a variety of organizations and welcomed personalities of diverse political affiliation and professions. Simon launched an invitation to take advantage of the accumulated experience and the additional opportunities offered by new technologies to launch a major campaign aimed at ending the criminal economic and commercial economic blockade imposed by the United States government against the Cuban people.
Simon finally highlighted the pride of receiving in Dublin to a Hero of the Republic of Cuba as Fernando Gonzalez Llort, emphasizing that such a condition Cuba exceptionally grants to those who have dedicated their lives and made important sacrifices for the defense of the Homeland.
