On February 27, the Embassy of Cuba in the United States welcomed the President, senior leaders, professors and students from Howard University, a notable U.S. academic institution established in 1867, which, throughout the years, has maintained a traditional relationship of friendship and cooperation with Cuba.
The Cuban Ambassador José Ramón Cabañas Rodríguez, in his welcoming remarks, underscored the historical ties between that University and the Cuban diplomatic mission in Washington D.C., which have been marked not only by the geographical proximity of both institutions, but also by the common interests in the field of higher education and the shared vision of working in favor of society and the view that knowledge should be accessible to everyone.
Likewise, the Cuban diplomat stressed the traditional relationship that exists between the government and people of Cuba and the African American community in the United States.
In addition, the President of Howard University, Wayne A. I. Frederick, underscored his first visit to Cuba in September 2016 and the enriching experiences of the visits and exchanges held on the Island by professors and students from that teaching institution, as he also highlighted the commitment of that U.S. University to continue working together.
Also giving remarks at the event were the student Lydia Johnson; professor Mesi Walton and the Director of the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center, Tonija Navas, who spoke highly of their work experiences in Cuba.
Among the participants in this event were ambassadors and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, specifically from Latin American, Caribbean and African countries, as well as friends of Cuba’s and members of the Cuban Community in the United States.
