Pretoria, February 27, 2023.- The deputy president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Víctor Gaute, accompanied by Yahimí Rodríguez, director of Africa and the Middle East, visited the Freedom Park.
They paid tribute there to the more than 2,000 Cubans who gave their lives in the struggles for the liberation of the African continent and whose names are reflected in the “Wall of Names”. This wall also includes the name of our Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro, who despite not having fought in person in Africa, was the main promoter of international solidarity with the continent.
They shared about the common history of Cuba and South Africa and the importance of keeping and strengthening the ties of solidarity and cooperation between our countries. The CEO of the park reiterated her gratitude to Cuba for its selfless contribution to the liberation of Africa, from which they only took the remains of its sons and daughters who fell in the fight.
For his part, Víctor Gaute referred to the need of keeping history alive through institutions such as Freedom Park, which not only commemorates our fore leaders, but also inspires and gives us an example so as not to give up before the challenges we have to face now and in the future.
