Increased international action needed to end the blockade of Cuba & normalise US-Cuban relations – Kearney

17 October 2025

Sinn Féin National Chairperson, Declan Kearney MLA has called on the international community to act decisively to end the six-decades long illegal US blockade against the Republic of Cuba and its people.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will consider a resolution between 28-29 October 2025 seeking an end to the economic restrictions imposed on Cuba by the United States.

Declan Kearney said:

“The entrenched US blockade against Cuba is not only morally unjustifiable and politically indefensible, it is illegal under international law. It represents six-decades of systematic collective punishment against the Cuban people.

“The forthcoming UNGA resolution vote which condemns the economic, commercial and financial embargoes upon Cuba, presents an opportunity for the international community to renew its demand that the US ends this policy.

“Since 1992 similar motions have annually passed through the UNGA without a diplomatic resolution. So a step change in diplomatic and political pressure is now required.

“A reset in political and diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba is needed. The blockade maintained by successive US administrations and now the current presidency have failed to undermine the Republic of Cuba. The only realistic and democratic solution is for peaceful coexistence based upon multilateralism, between the governments of Cuba and the USA.

“The international community, including the Irish government, should politically press for an end to the hardship being imposed on the Cuban people, and to assert the primacy of international law.

“The international community must collectively focus upon developing new initiatives to encourage the normalising of US-Cuba relations and to finally bring an end to this illegal blockade.”
