La Colmenita de Cuba in New York with honeys of solidarity

The Cuban children's theater company La Colmenita once again showed its magic, talent, and beauty during a show that overflowed with joy at the iconic Apollo Theater in the popular New York neighborhood of Harlem.

Libando las mieles de la solidaridad, was the gift brought by the children directed by Carlos Alberto 'Tin' Cremata to an audience that defied the weather conditions and came not only from New York but from Detroit, Michigan; Boston, Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or Washington DC, the capital, as Prensa Latina was able to confirm.

Such was the case of political activist Jodie Evans, who emotionally commented to this news agency that her “heart at the beginning of the day was broken with pain for what is happening in the world, but now it is full of joy for these children”.

A documentary film producer and co-founder of the pacifist organization CodePink, Evans affirmed that “children are the most valuable thing on the planet” and in that sense, she highlighted the freedom enjoyed by Cuban children.

He said he saw on stage children who “know the truth and share it open-heartedly and beautifully.”

“I think the kids have a lot of talent and also a very powerful message about how we have to extend solidarity to the Cuban people and all the people in the world who are suffering under imperialism and oppression,” commented Joe Tache, a young man from Boston.

While Gabby Ballard, from Philadelphia, expressed that “La Colmenita is one of the best children's performances I have ever seen.

“The energy, drama, and enthusiasm were beautiful, it's a lot of children's voices and I love to see their smiling faces and the beautiful and positive message they shared with the whole audience. Great,” he said.

The time passed between the mix of songs, which allowed the cast to interact with the audience. “Mom I want to know where the singers are from...they are from the hills and sing in the plains...everyone provokes me to dance the toca toca...Come hope in any color, green red, or, black, but with love...let's walk to get there...”

La Colmenita was the closing last night of the event “Latin America Speaks Solidarity vs. Empire”, an event that previously had among its speakers the foreign ministers of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez, and Yvan Gil, of Venezuela.

Other speakers included activist Manolo De Los Santos, co-executive director of The People's Forum; Lameess Mohammed of the Palestinian Youth Movement; and writer and journalist Vijay Prashad, director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2007 and founded on February 14, 1990, by Cremata, La Colmenita is touring several cities on this, its fourth visit to the United States.

The group arrived in Tampa on September 25, where it attended the inauguration of the (José) Martí building, dedicated to Cuba's National Hero. The building is part of a project that seeks to rescue the memory and history that connect that city in the state of Florida with the island.

At the end of their stay in New York, La Colmenita will perform in Washington DC, the last stop of their tour.

By the time they leave, they will have made new friends and sympathies, and there is even the idea -this is exclusive- of leaving all the “bees” ready to form another Colmenita in a city in these parts.
