Large delegation of U.S. youth travels to Cuba

A delegation of 150 young leaders from U.S. social movements and organizations will travel today to Cuba, where they will carry out an extensive program of activities and participate in May Day celebrations.

"As young leaders in the United States we want to affirm our right to learn, exchange and build with the Cuban people who live under cruel sanctions and remain on the list of state sponsors of terror for no credible reason," said activist Manolo de los Santos.

According to the program, to which Prensa Latina had access, the delegation -the largest of its kind to visit the Antillean nation in decades- will have until May 3 a full agenda that begins tomorrow at Casa de las Americas with a panel on human rights in Cuba.

Afterwards, they will visit, among other places of interest, the Latin American School of Medicine, changing neighborhoods in the capital, scientific institutions and the Fidel Castro Center, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the leader of the Cuban Revolution.

They will also visit the central city of Santa Clara, in Villa Clara province, located some 280 kilometers east of Havana, where they will hold a meeting with young people and pay homage to Argentine-Cuban guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara and his comrades in the Mausoleum where his remains are kept. On their return to the capital, the members of the group will participate in the popular celebration of International Workers' Day, and on May 2 they will attend the meeting of solidarity with Cuba at the Palacio de las Convenciones.

The delegation will renew the historic ties of solidarity between the people of Cuba and the United States, despite President Joe Biden's aggressive foreign policy, said De Los Santos, co-executive director of The People's Forum, one of the organizations coordinating the initiative.

The trip will occur at a crucial time, when public opinion in the United States about the more than 60-year U.S. blockade against Cuba is changing and youth are increasingly questioning why the Caribbean country is the target of that hostile policy, a statement said.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples will host the U.S. youth delegation during their stay on the island.
