Legislators from the US state of Connecticut today visited the headquarters of Prensa Latina, as part of a trip to Cuba that seeks to strengthen bilateral relations and demand an end to the blockade imposed by Washington.
Geraldo Reyes Jr., James Sánchez and Anabel Figueroa, members of the House of Representatives of the Connecticut General Assembly, and Edwin Vargas Jr., former member of that body, spoke with the president of this news agency, Luis Enrique González, about the purpose of their time on the island and their impressions of this stay.
During the dialogue, the U.S. legislators reiterated their interest in contributing to the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade maintained by the U.S. government against the Caribbean country for more than six decades, which they described as unjust.
Sánchez said that if they cannot bring about the end of that siege, they at least wish to relax it and promote collaboration in areas beneficial to both parties such as trade, medicine, science and sports.
For her part, Figueroa said that when they arrived in the Antillean nation they found a wonderful country, about which there are many myths in the United States.
The state representative considered that the measures promoted from Washington "do not punish the government, they punish the people of Cuba", and added that they have the mission to help reverse that situation.
He also stressed the importance of many more Americans coming to see the reality of the largest Antillean island, not only legislators, but the people in general, a criterion supported by Reyes, who stressed the importance of dialoguing with Cubans and asking key questions.
In turn, Vargas addressed the characteristics of Connecticut, its regional and national importance in the United States, while stressing that many of its legislators, including at the federal level, are in favor of improving relations with Cuba and the elimination of the blockade.
In the conversation, Gonzalez thanked the visitors for approaching Prensa Latina during this stay that began last Sunday and will conclude tomorrow, during which the delegation also visited the National Capitol of Cuba (administrative headquarters of the parliament), the Latin American stadium and other spaces.
Likewise, he referred to the continuous damages that the siege imposed by Washington causes to Cubans, a policy that also directly affects the work of this news agency.
