Long live Cuba!

SKP statement against the blockade

4/3/2024

The embargo maintained by the United States against Cuba is a cruel crime that ignores the right of a people to build their own future. The trade embargo not only causes suffering to the Cuban people, but also makes it difficult for the country to develop and reach its full potential. In addition to opposing the economic war condemned by the international community, it is important to recognize Cuba's achievements and efforts for well-being and human rights, as well as the country's significant contribution to international aid and solidarity work. The district organization of the SKP (Suomen Kommunistinen Puolue) in Uusimaa shows its permanent support for the Cuban people and socialism.

However, under the shadow of a trade embargo that has lasted more than 60 years under harsh conditions, Cuba has achieved considerable social progress. Education is free at all levels and the best in the world, health care is preventive and free, the employment rate is high due to the strong role of the public sector, and culture and art are valued and participation in cultural life. as a right of all. There is also an example to follow for the rest of the world in the implementation of Cuban participatory local democracy. Compliance with the basic right to housing is guaranteed by maintaining the level of affordable housing prices.

Cuban doctors have played a central role in many international health crises, such as the Ebola epidemic in Africa and the corona pandemic around the world. Cuba developed three of its own corona vaccines. Additionally, Cuba has sent doctors and other experts to provide emergency assistance to disaster areas around the world.

The trade embargo imposed by the United States and Cuba's addition to the list of "countries that support terrorism" severely hamper Cuba's ability to provide basic services to its citizens and implement development projects. It has a negative impact on food security, healthcare and economic development. For example, Cuba cannot freely purchase medicines, instruments or technology, whose components more than 10 percent come from the United States. Acquiring many machines, spare parts and medicines through intermediaries will be between 30 and 40 percent more expensive for Cuba than if they were purchased in nearby places. The fuel price increase that has made headlines is a direct effect of the trade embargo and the "terrorist list."

Finland must act firmly to end the trade embargo and strengthen diplomatic relations, trade and cooperation with Cuba.

Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has condemned the trade embargo against Cuba on all occasions. More recently, only the United States and Israel voted in favor of the blockade. Pressure must be increased on the United States to lift this unfair and harmful embargo. Cuba must be supported in its efforts to offer a dignified life to its citizens and actively participate in global solidarity work. Finland must act firmly to end the trade embargo and strengthen diplomatic relations, trade and cooperation with Cuba.

Nations have a right to live, even if the United States doesn't like the democratically chosen line.
