The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, received the activist Carlos Lazo and a representation of the delegation of 40 American students, parents and teachers from the Puentes de Amor solidarity project.
What the Bridges of Love Project is doing “demonstrates that the majority of North Americans and the majority of Cubans who live in the United States are not for the blockade nor are they against Cuba; on the contrary, the majority wants a normal relationship between peoples, a normal relationship between countries».
This was stated by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, when receiving the activist Carlos Lazo and a representative of the delegation from 40 American students, parents and teachers from the Puentes de Amor solidarity project, visiting the Island.
Regarding the experience, the leader of the Puentes de Amor platform pointed out that “it has been a very enriching stay, and it has allowed them to learn about the reality of the Cuban people. We have talked with people on the street, in schools, in cultural centers; and it has been something that has opened the eyes of these North American families, these parents, about how the blockade affects the Cuban people and the need to lift those sanctions.”
The Cuban President expressed to Carlos Lazo, “once again, our gratitude, our recognition of all your work and that of Puentes de Amor. We had the opportunity to talk during your previous visit, and after that many things have happened; and you have continued with such intense activity, you have continued to make gestures that have marked milestones in the sentiment of our people».
An example of how much they have done, Díaz-Canel recalled, was the donation for the pediatric liver transplant program, "which was something that touched everyone's heart here." "Our people - he added - have become accustomed to looking for news every week about Bridges of Love, about the caravans against the blockade, about what is happening in the cities of the United States in relation to Cuba."
In addition to what you mean morally, emotionally, sentimentally as support, you also –he explained– «you fill us with admiration, because you, in the face of the current complex situation, the pressures you receive, the way you are treated, the way you have stood your ground shows your conviction.”
And you do it – he explained – “in the midst of a reality that seems not going to change, that is going to be maintained (because), Biden persists in the measures that Trump applied, which have really affected us a lot. And these (measures) that he announced (now) – which in our view was not a wish, but rather responded to pressure from the Summit of the Americas – practically do not dismantle anything ».
Díaz-Canel later highlighted the importance of what the Puentes de Amor solidarity project is doing; “especially to show that the blockade is immoral. The concept of the immorality of the blockade reaches everyone, regardless of beliefs, of political positions.
“Sacrificing the life of a people, of a country, for a political interest that is not that of the majority – in the United States there is no majority of people against Cuba, on the contrary – is totally immoral,” emphasized the president, who denounced how the blockade is leading an aggressive media accompaniment that tries to cover its immorality.
“We have said it several times, we have nothing against the American people,” Díaz-Canel emphasized, pointing out that what Puentes de Amor is doing also shows that the best feelings towards Cuba exist in that people.
The media presentation that is trying to be imposed on the fact that there is a strong monolithic bloc of North Americans and Cubans in the United States who do not want anything with Cuba and are in favor of the blockade, is totally untrue -the Head of State stressed- "and it shows in what you do, and where more and more people participate, be it in the caravans, in the acts, in the demonstrations».
"Therefore - summed up the Cuban President - what you are doing, in addition to the contribution that can mean in aid, in solidarity, is also a contribution in raising awareness, and that is what makes this whole movement stronger."
