MAKES CUBAN MEDICAL BRIGADE IN DOMINICA MORE THAN 28 THOUSAND MEDICAL CONSULTATIONS

Roseau, February 2, 2019. A total of 28 269 medical consultations carried out in 2018, the Cuban medical brigade that provides services in the sister nation of Dominica. The figure was announced by the head of the brigade, Dr. Isolina López Cardoso, at the meeting held yesterday night, February 1, 2018, at the Hospital Princesa Margarita, the main hospital in the country; in which the results of the work carried out last year were analyzed. The number of consultations represents 39% of the total population of Dominica, whose figure exceeds 73 thousand inhabitants.

Other figures reported that highlight the results of the work of Cuban health professionals are the nearly 500 patients treated in emergency services, which saved 70 people, the 849 surgical procedures performed, the 857 anesthesia applied, the 18,579 nursing actions, the 22,350 diagnostic means performed and the 492 medical equipment repaired.

The medical brigade, whose number of members in the year 2017 was 29, reaches today the figure of 47 and must continue to increase, which supports the acceptance that has had for the results achieved. Another indicator that shows their professional level is that not only all are doctors and graduates but also 14 have different teaching categories. They also analyzed the dissatisfactions that exist in the work and how to improve it.

An emotional moment was when Dr. René Guibert Veranes, surgeon and one of the members of the brigade who was at the time of Hurricane Maria, narrated the experiences. Of the 29 that were in Dominica at the time of the hurricane, 7 still remain in the brigade, of which 5, including Dr. Guibert, had the mission to remain at the Hospital Princesa Margarita all the time the storm lasted.

At the end of the meeting, the ambassador of Cuba in this country, Ulises Arranz Fernández, congratulated all the members of the brigade for the dedication to work, the effort made, the results achieved and the high human sensitivity shown. He exhorted them to meet the new goals set. He referred to international events, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean and the new actions against Cuba by the US government. He reiterated the importance of everyone going to vote on February 16, the date on which the will vote an YES for the new Cuban Constitution.
