Dublin, February 21, 2024. The mayor of Cork, Mr. Kieran McCarthy, accompanied by authorities from that city, received this morning the Cuban ambassador to Ireland, Bernardo Guanche Hernández, who exchanged on the perspectives of cooperation between both parties, in particular, in sports matters.
The Mayor thanked the meeting and explained to the ambassador the efforts made by the city authorities to develop sport, mentioning in particular boxing, which is very popular among the youth of Cork. Likewise, he expressed his willingness to strengthen ties with Cuba.
For his part, the Cuban ambassador referred to the importance that the Cuban government gives to the development of sports in general and boxing in particular, which constitutes a national pride based on the results obtained, which includes 78 Olympic medals in this branch. He also explained the priority that Cuba gives to attracting talent from an early age, both in this and other sports specialties. He pointed out that this effort is being carried out in the midst of the difficult situation that the country is going through, based on the intensified North American economic, commercial and financial blockade.
Subsequently, the Cuban diplomat went to the “Glen Boxing Club”, where he was received by Mr. Anthony Connolly, its President and other directors, including the renowned Irish boxing coach, Tom Kelleher, who showed him the museum where the ring and have historical photos mounted, which includes one of the latter with unforgettable Cuban boxer Teófilo Stevenson.
During the visit, the deep ties of brotherhood between the people of Cuba and Ireland were once again evident.
