McGovern introduces bill to end U.S. blockade against Cuba and calls for diplomacy

US Representative Jim McGovern (Democrat from Massachusetts) and Co-Chair of the Human Rights Commission Tom Lantos presented a new bill aimed at repealing the legal basis for the economic blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for more than six decades. The initiative comes in response to the actions of the current US administration, which imposes trade tariffs on countries that trade oil with the island.

The proposal, identified as H.R. 7521 and called the “U.S.-Cuba Trade Act,” seeks to eliminate or modify several laws passed over decades that restrict trade, academic and cultural exchange, telecommunications, and travel between the two countries. In the Senate, a similar initiative—S. 136—was introduced by Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, both Democrats from the state of Oregon.

McGovern, a prominent member of the House Rules Committee, questioned the basis and consequences of the blockade policy against Cuba. He added that economic sanctions worsen the living conditions of the Cuban people, affecting mainly ordinary citizens.

The bill proposes replacing this aggressive approach with a strategy focused on economic and diplomatic cooperation.
