Meeting with Robert Dowhan, Chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba
Warsaw, May 15—Cuban Ambassador Ibete Fernández Hernández and Second Secretary Brenda Cantalapiedra held a meeting at the embassy with Robert Dowhan, chairman of the Polish Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba, during which they discussed in detail the delicate situation currently facing the island.
The Cuban diplomat placed special emphasis on the challenges Cuba faces due to the intensification of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, which has been escalated this year following the U.S. administration’s executive orders on January 26 and March 1, 2026, introducing new measures that restrict fuel supplies. These actions are based on the designation of Cuba as a threat to U.S. national security, which allows for the application of secondary sanctions against counterparties, banks, and individuals even if their businesses in the United States have no connection to Cuba.
The meeting provided an opportunity to reiterate how these pressure tactics seek to strangle the Cuban economy, directly impacting the daily lives of our people, as well as health and education, and adding to the suffering of our people.
Both parties agreed on the importance of maintaining fluid and constant communication, which allows for the sharing of up-to-date information and the coordination of efforts to strengthen parliamentary relations.
