Nicosia, Cyprus, June 17, 2026. Members of the United Democratic Youth Organization (EDON) of Cyprus held a tribute event this Wednesday in the municipality of Nicosia to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.
In coordination with the Cuban Embassy in Nicosia, the young people organized this tribute event, titled “100 Years Since Fidel’s Birth: Challenges Facing Cuba Today,” during which they engaged in extensive discussions with Cuban Ambassador Rubén Pino Martínez at a youth center in the heart of the Cypriot capital.
The Cuban diplomat thanked the EDON youth for the opportunity to join countless similar tributes taking place this year in various corners of the globe, and for being able to share with those present unforgettable testimonies and audiovisual materials produced by the Fidel Castro Center in Havana, which enrich the knowledge and historical memory of this noble Cypriot generation.
The young people appreciated the opportunity to get closer to the vision of those who shared historic moments with the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro, and who can now remember them with subtitles in Greek; an initiative promoted as part of the organization's activities, ahead of the celebration of its upcoming 38th Panchipriota Youth and Students Festival EDON.
The event provided an opportunity for a discussion on political and social developments in Cuba and the international and economic challenges currently facing the largest of the Antilles, amid the cruelest and most inhumane economic blockade and energy embargo imposed by the U.S. government against the Caribbean nation.
It was an event that “shed light on the current situation in Cuba,” according to the young attendees, who were accompanied by Vera Policarpou, head of International Relations and European Policy for the Central Committee of the AKEL Party and a member of the Executive Board of the Cuba-Cyprus Friendship Association.
