More than 50 young South Africans graduate from Medicine in Cuba

Johannesburg, 4 July 2025. Today, at the University of Witwatersrand, the graduation of 53 young South Africans, who completed their medical studies in Cuba under the Nelson Mandela-Fidel Castro academic training programme, was celebrated.

The event was attended by Joseph Mathuwe Phaahla, South African Deputy Minister of Health; Fidela Mariana Reyes, Director General of Medical Education at the Cuban Ministry of Public Health; and Esther Armenteros Cárdenas, Cuban Chargé d'Affaires in South Africa. Members of the medical collaboration and the embassy also participated.

This occasion was an opportunity to highlight the values of the programme and Cuba's contribution to the academic training of health professionals in South Africa.
