Detroit, April 11, 2026 – From April 8 to 12, the 2026 National Convention of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) was held at the Westin Southfield Detroit under the theme #Law4ThePeople.
The NLG plenary unanimously adopted an emergency resolution rejecting the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States against Cuba, particularly Executive Order 14380 issued by President Donald Trump.
The resolution denounces that this order, along with the oil blockade enforced through sanctions and threats, has worsened the humanitarian situation on the island, severely affecting electricity supply, food availability, transportation, and medical services.
The NLG calls for the immediate repeal of Executive Order 14380, the initiation of good-faith negotiations with the Government of Cuba based on mutual respect for sovereignty, and for the United States Congress to repeal the Helms-Burton Act and all laws that hinder the normalization of relations between the two countries.
Through its Cuba Subcommittee, the NLG has promoted numerous initiatives in solidarity with the Cuban people over the decades. These include direct legal support for the Cuban Five before U.S. courts and the United Nations, legal representation of organizations such as Pastors for Peace, and the recurring adoption of resolutions calling for an end to the economic blockade. These actions combine legal, organizational, and political support, sustaining the NLG’s longstanding tradition of solidarity with Cuba.
