National Writers' Association of South Africa stands in solidarity with Nancy Morejon.

Pretoria, 16 June 2023 - The National Writers' Association of South Africa (NWASA) condemned the fascist attacks against Afro-Cuban poet Nancy Morejón during her stay in France.

NWASA fondly recalled Nancy's visit to South Africa in the early 1990s as a special guest of the Congress of South Africa (COSAW) and how she preferred to stay in the homes of her poet comrades rather than in hotels.

The organisation echoed the words of the current National Poet Laureate of South Africa and member of NWASA, Dr Mongane Serote, who wrote about this situation: "As history has clearly illustrated, imperialism has been and is sustained by the exploitation of human beings by other human beings, with practices such as genocides, massacres and oppression of the masses. Consequently, as Africans, we call on our fighting ancestors to keep us strong and optimistic, and to remain in the struggle against oppression and exploitation".
