Pretoria, January 25, 2022.- The President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, received this afternoon, in a solemn audience held at the presidential residence, the Letters of Credence accrediting the Cuban Ambassador Enrique Orta González, as the new Ambassador of Cuba to the Republic of South Africa.
In his words, the new Cuban ambassador expressed gratitude for the traditional support received from South Africa in the fair demands of the Island before the United Nations for the lifting of the blockade. He also ratified the will of the Caribbean nation to work towards further strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
For his part, the high-ranking South African president reiterated South Africa's support in the fight against the criminal blockade imposed by the United States government and sent a fraternal greeting to his Cuban counterpart Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez.
The ties of brotherhood between Cuba and South Africa date back to the 1960s in the heat of anti-apartheid struggles. Diplomatic relations were formally signed on May 11, 1994, in a ceremony headed by leaders Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro Ruz, which was considered one of the first acts of foreign policy of the new democratic government of the African nation.
