New EDEK President Receives Cuban Ambassador in Cyprus on Courtesy Visit.

Nicosia, September 28, 2026 – The new president of the Socialist Party of Cyprus (EDEK), Sofía Christodoulou Makri, received on Monday at the offices of her political group the ambassador of the Republic of Cuba accredited in Nicosia, Rubén Pino Martínez.

During the courtesy visit, the Cuban diplomat personally congratulated the young lawyer and new EDEK president on her appointment, and she expressed warm words of gratitude and openness toward the Caribbean ambassador; a reflection of the excellent relations between both peoples and nations, as well as the close ties between the political party she leads and the Communist Party of Cuba.

Pino Martínez was able to update him on the difficult economic situation the island is going through, due to the hostile, inhuman, and criminal blockade imposed by the U.S. government, along with the suffocating energy siege that has increased the suffering of millions of Cubans over the past eleven months, caused by the application of extraterritorial measures and sanctions against the largest of the Antilles and/or third countries trying to do business with Cuba.

During the friendly meeting, the Cuban ambassador shared a copy of the report that Cuba will submit for a vote before the international community at the United Nations General Assembly, a summary that will illustrate the economic cost and human damage that this six-decade-old U.S. policy has inflicted on our country, particularly over the past year.

Both of them discussed the excellent relationships and historical ties that have marked successive generations of Cuban Revolution leaders with important figures of the EDEK Party, and which today are renewed with the common and explicit will of both representatives to continue strengthening them.

The president of EDEK, Sofía Christodoulou, inquired about how to help Cuba in these circumstances, beyond her explicit solidarity with the Caribbean nation, while also sharing with the Cuban diplomat some priorities that concern them today regarding the issue of Cyprus and various topics that demand attention for the present and future of their political group, as well as the regional and international scene.

A meeting that ended with the gift from the Cuban ambassador to his hostess, a copy of "History of Cuba: The Yoke and the Star" by José Cantón Navarro, whose first edition in Greek has managed to reach Cypriot readers and provide a broader and richer view of Cuba's national history on this Mediterranean island.
