New edition of the "Afrekete" Festival takes place in Magnetic Island.

Brisbane, Magnetic Island, 6-9 June 2024. Hosted by the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC), the Afrekete cultural festival was presented today on Magnetic Island. 

The presentation, performed by quabnos resident in Australia, explores the advent of the formation of the Cuban-Australian identity that has grown over time in different generations.  

A dynamic, colorful and original show exploring the spiritual journey of music, dance and culture developed in Cuba by African slaves and their descendants kicked off the Festival on this occasion. 

This show, presented a cast of Cuban musicians and dancers residing in Australia, of great versatility and with a great mix of traditional Cuban percussion styles as well as contemporary interpretations, including original compositions, which explored the deepest of modern and ancient Cuban identity in the southern country.

The Festival featured Afro-Cuban music workshops, traditional Cuban dance and a wide range of activities that delighted the Australian audience in attendance. It was a party of colors where Cuba was present in the Australian geography.
