The City Council of the US city of New Haven (Connecticut) on Tuesday approved a resolution calling on President Joe Biden and Congress to lift the blockade against Cuba and to normalize relations with the Caribbean island.
The document, presented by Councilmen Darryl Brackeen, Sarah Miller and Alex Guzhnay, demands that Washington eliminate restrictions on trade and travel between the two countries and work to resume full diplomatic and consular relations.
The resolution indicates that the end of coercive measures against Cuba would allow New Haven-based companies to collaborate with biotechnological and medical research institutions in the Caribbean nation in the development of medicines, clinical trials, genetics and devices.
The text warns that Washington’s blockade greatly contributes to food, fuel and medical supply shortages in Cuba.
New Haven’s resolution joins the calls from other US cities, such as Hartford and Boston, which also call for the lifting of sanctions against Cuba.
