The unprecedented situation the planet is going through with the coronavirus pandemic has once again highlighted the dilemma between the path of international cooperation and solidarity to address humanity’s modern problems and the choice of national entrenchment and individualism.
In these conditions, the example of the Cuban doctors in confronting the pandemic sends out a universal message of humanism and selflessness. During the pandemic, the ‘Henry Reeve’ International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics carried out 45 missions in 38 countries around the world, consisting of over 3.5 thousand doctors, nurses and health personnel. These missions have treated more than 250,000 people, saving the lives of more than 8,000 patients.
The medical staff of the Henry Reeve International Force continues a long tradition of volunteer service, solidarity and selflessness, providing invaluable assistance in disasters and severe epidemics to more than 3.5 million people all over the world. Their contribution was significant, in the period 2014-2015, when more than 400 doctors and nurses contributed to the treatment of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa, representing the biggest medical operation ever carried out in the countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.
It is worth pointing that Cuba, which is developing this activity, is a small country that has in fact been the subject of an economic, financial and trade blockade from the United States for decades, despite repeated UN General Assembly Resolutions calling for its termination.
For all these reasons, the Parliamentary Group of AKEL - Left - New Forces unites its voice with thousands of citizens, organizations and officials from around the world who are proposing this year's Nobel Peace Prize be awarded to the "Henry Reeve" International Force. The support for the proposal will be submitted by the Parliamentary Group of AKEL and officially through the established procedure of the Nobel Committee.
