Over £20,000 raised in the United Kingdom to help Cuba in the fight against COVID-19

More than 20 thousand sterling pounds (around 25 thousand dollars) have been raised until this Monday by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) in the United Kingdom, to help the Caribbean island fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

"On behalf of the CSC, I want to thank all those who responded so quickly to the emergency appeal," said the director of the Campaign, Rob Miller,  on Monday in a statement denouncing the impact of the US blockade against the Antillean country.

According to the text, the money was collected from more than 500 donors in the first days of the appeal through the CSC website ( https://cuba-solidarity.org.uk/emergency-appeal -for-cuba / ) last week.

The money will be sent to the Cuban Ministry of Public Health to purchase artificial ventilators, COVID-19 testing kits and personal protective equipment for health personnel.

In this regard, the British organization recalls that the unilateral measures imposed by Washington for almost six decades causes a shortage of medical supplies, fuel and other basic products in Cuba, and that this situation has been exacerbated with the strengthening of sanctions by President Donald Trump administration.

The ongoing brutal US blockade prevents vital supplies from reaching Cuba, highlighted Miller, who called for a redoubling of the campaign against that policy, and to help the Cuban people in any way possible.

The activist also emphasized the “incredible” international response that the small Caribbean island is offering to the COVID-19 pandemic, by sending more than 20 medical brigades to different countries to help fight the pandemic.

In addition to raising funds, the CSC is leading a campaign to collect signatures in support of an open letter sent to the British government to intercede with the United States authorities for the lifting of punitive measures against the Caribbean island.

The petition has so far been signed by more than 15,400 people from a hundred countries.
