Permanent Secretary of Health of Saint Kitts and Nevis praised the intense work agenda
Basseterre, April 26, 2025: Curtis Martin, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health of Saint Kitts and Nevis, within the framework of his participation in the V International Convention Cuba-Health, which took place in Havana, praised a parallel agenda that allowed him to dialogue with his Cuban counterpart, visit medical institutions in the capital, meet with some of the university students of his country and also get to know a little of the city that welcomed him for the first time.
During the plenary session "Science and training as pillars of development" the Permanent Secretary presented a motivating speech in which he prioritized gratitude to Cuba for the historical assitance the health challenges faced by his nation and also reflections on good medical practices.
On a courtesy visit to the Deputy Minister of Health of Cuba, Dr. Carilda Peña García, Mr. Martin showed interest in new avenues of cooperation in medicine and the continuity of educational opportunities in Cuba for health professionals in Saint Kitts and Nevis. He emphasized the importance of strengthening mechanisms for the benefit of both countries.
Likewise, on his tour of health institutions, he visited the Hermanos Ameijeiras Surgical Clinical Hospital and the ‘Frank País’ International Orthopedic Scientific Complex, where he received first-hand information from Cuban professionals who work on protocols, research, and diagnoses, as well as human resources and infrastructure of these centers. He also visited the ‘Héroes del Moncada’ polyclinic, where he was interested in primary services, emergencies, maternal and childcare as well as vaccination programs.
In coordination with his country's Embassy in Havana, he had the opportunity to meet with some of the young people of his country who are studying at universities in the Cuban capital. During the exchange, Mr. Martin addressed diverse topics, and listened to concerns from them, questions, and suggestions about health, as well as perspectives on the environment in which they carry out their studies.
This first visit of Permanent Secretary Martin allowed him to create a vision of Cuba from within, to feel our reality and corroborate the importance of strengthening our ties in the field of cooperation and solidarity.
