Philadelphia shows interest in increasing ties with Cuba

The Minister-Counselor Ruben Ramos, Head of the Economic-Commercial Office of the Embassy of Cuba in the United States, paid a working visit to Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania on April 10-11, which evidenced the interests of business representatives and other sectors of this city to increase ties with the Island.

As part of his program of activities, the Cuban diplomat was received by Jim Kenney, Mayor of Philadelphia, with whom he discussed future projects in Cuba in the fields of culture, sports, trade and commerce.

The representative of the Embassy of Cuba also participated in a seminar on doing business with Cuba, in which he highlighted the opportunities offered by the Island in trade, commerce and foreign investment and the prospects that exist to strengthen the trade relations between both countries. Mr. Ramos also exchanged views with an important group of companies and representatives of the business sector in that city, including Jeff Theobald, CEO of Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (Port of Philadelphia) and Linda Mysliwy Conlin, President of the World Trade Center.

During his stay in Philadelphia, the Cuban diplomat visited the University of Sciences and the Singh Center for Nanotechnology of the University of Pennsylvania, and had fruitful exchanges with both institutions.

As a result of his visit, future work will be underway to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the relevant Cuban authorities and the Port of Philadelphia, and a similar agreement with Penn University, which will make possible the exchange among researchers from both countries in the field of nanoscience.
