The Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba released a message sent by Pope Francis to the Cuban people on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the pastoral visit of His Holiness John Paul II to our country.
Juan Pablo honored Cuba with his visit between January 21 and 25, 1998, and was received and said goodbye by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
In his message, Pope Francis describes that visit as "a moment of grace and blessing for all" and asks the people and the Catholic community in our country to "make present in their hearts the gestures and words that my predecessor gave them. He directed during his visit, that they resonate strongly in the present, and give a new impetus to continue building the future of that nation with hope and determination.”
The Supreme Pontiff highlighted the work and sacrifice of many for all the people, and in a special way for those most in need. "Thank you for that example of collaboration and mutual aid that unites you and that reveals the spirit that characterizes you: open, welcoming and supportive," he said.
As a sign of closeness and communion with the Cuban people, the Pope recalls in his message some words of Father Félix Varela: "After the tree takes root, it will soon spread its branches, and virtue will rest in its shadow." He invited us to continue delving into our roots with courage and responsibility, and to continue "bearing fruit united in faith, hope and charity".
Francis highlights the invitation of the Cuban Episcopal Conference for Cardinal Beniamino Stella, who as Apostolic Nuncio in those years was a privileged witness to the visit of John Paul II, to come to Cuba on this significant occasion; and makes public his request to Stella to bring them his greetings and blessing.
“May Jesus bless the Cuban people and Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre take care of them and accompany them. I pray for you and I ask you, please, to pray for me”, concludes the Pope's message.
