Nicosia, September 21, 2026. The President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Mr Nikolas Papadopoulos, received on Monday morning, in a courtesy visit, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Rubén Pino Martínez, at the political party's headquarters.
The Cuban ambassador thanked his host for receiving him and for the opportunity to discuss issues of current European and international affairs as well as the upcoming electoral process on the Mediterranean island; at the same time, he provided an overview of the economic situation that his country is currently experiencing, worsened by the blockade policy imposed by the U.S. government against Cuba and the damage caused by the current energy siege, which affects -- like a collective punishment -- the entire Cuban population; nevertheless, the economic measures that the Caribbean nation takes with resilience, creativity, and determination to face such a criminal blockade.
Pino Martínez and Nikolas Papadopoulos reaffirmed the historic ties of solidarity and mutual support that Cyprus and Cuba have developed in different areas over more than 65 years of positive relations between their governments and peoples, a result of the close bilateral links promoted over six decades.
