PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF PEOPLE'S POWER EXERCISES PARLIAMENTARY DIPLOMACY IN DEFENSE OF PEACE AND SOVEREIGNTY OF THE CUBAN PEOPLE

In compliance with his powers enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic and other laws in force as President of the National Assembly of People's Power and of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, and in representation of our people; Deputy Esteban Lazo Hernández has sent immediate official communication to the presidents of 10 inter-parliamentary organizations.

In letters sent to the heads of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, the BRICS Parliamentary Forum, the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AIPA), the Pan-African Parliament, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO), the Mercosur Parliament (PARLASUR), the Andean Parliament (PARLANDINO), the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), and ParlAmericas, the head of the Cuban legislature informed them of the recent statements by the Revolutionary Government and the Council of State of our country, in which it was warned that Cuba is currently under the real and dangerous threat of direct military aggression by the United States government.

The message states that this aggressive escalation by the Trump Administration "is compounded by the recent executive orders of the US President that intensify, to extreme levels, the economic, commercial and financial blockade; the energy embargo and other unilateral coercive measures against our country that, for this reason, increase the suffering of our people."

Likewise, Esteban Lazo Hernández states that "to such mendacious and immoral actions has been added, since last May 20, the infamous accusation by the U.S. Department of Justice against Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution; an illegitimate and despicable act, marked by dishonest and political manipulation, by distorting the facts that led to the downing over Cuban airspace, in February 1996, of two aircraft operated by the terrorist organization Brothers to the Rescue, based in Miami."

These unjust and aggressive acts not only violate the principles of international law and infringe upon the sovereignty and dignity of our nation, but also have the perverse aim of intensifying the illegitimate blockade and its policy of suffocation against our heroic people, and they threaten the human rights of Cuban men and women: first and foremost, the right to life. In particular, the current situation exacerbates the collective suffering and the quality of life of our citizens due to the genocidal effects and other damages that the intensified blockade inflicts on our people, the letters sent to the heads of interparliamentary organizations add.

In the official communication, also sent to several national parliaments and international legislators, the “mobilization and pronouncements of support for the just and legitimate cause of the Cuban people have been requested; to prevent a military adventure against our nation that would provoke a humanitarian catastrophe and destabilize the Latin American and Caribbean region as a Zone of Peace, with incalculable consequences for the world as well.”

At the same time, it is reiterated that Cuba does not threaten any country; rather, it desires and works every day for a peaceful region and a peaceful world, as enshrined in the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, signed in January 2014 in Havana by the Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

As has been reiterated by our country's authorities, Cuba is willing to engage in dialogue with the United States based on respect for our sovereignty, our political system, our self-determination, and the principles of international law; to maintain a civilized, neighborly relationship with that country, regardless of our differences.

Finally, Esteban Lazo Hernández expressed his deep gratitude for the expressions of support and solidarity with Cuba received at the parliamentary level in support of the Cuban people; these reaffirm that Cuba is not alone.

This exercise in parliamentary diplomacy, undertaken by the President of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, was carried out in accordance with his role as the legitimate representative of the Cuban people.

Furthermore, it has been reaffirmed that, as our people know, just a few days ago, more than 6,230,973 Cubans participated in the popular mobilization process "My Signature for the Homeland," reiterating their commitment to defending the Homeland and its Socialist Revolution until victory, always, and that Cuba desires peace.
