The President of the Republic decreed Official Mourning following the death of the beloved President of the Republic of Namibia

Havana, February 4, 2024.- Our people have learned, with deep pain, of the death of the beloved president of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellency. Mr. Dr. Hage Gotfried Geingob. Throughout his life, from his time as a tireless fighter for the independence of Namibia, to his performance as President, Prime Minister and in other high positions of the sister African nation, he demonstrated his enormous affection and friendship for Cuba.

For this reason, the President of the Republic of Cuba decreed an Official Mourning, from 6:00 a.m. on February 5 to 12:00 p.m. on February 6, 2024. The late leader contributed greatly to consolidating and strengthening the historic relations of brotherhood between both countries.

He received the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Order in 1994 and was awarded the José Martí Order, which will be awarded posthumously. The Cuban people appreciate your clear and repeated public denunciations of the blockade and your country's leadership in the adoption of resolutions on the issue in the African Union and in other international settings. During the Official Mourning period, the Lone Star Flag must be flown at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.
