President of South Africa exchanges with Cuban doctors

Pretoria, June 8, 2020.- On the occasion of the inauguration of the Hospital of Hope, a temporary health facility built in the South African province of Western Cape, a representation of the Cuban Medical Brigade deployed in that province to assist with COVID-19, exchanged with the President of the nation Cyril Ramaphosa.

The South African President thanked Cuban health professionals for coming to the country to help South African doctors fight the pandemic. He also thanked the people of Cuba for that beautiful gesture.

The coordinator of the Cuban Medical Brigade in that province, Dr. Pedro Pérez Armas, recalled the special ties of friendship that unite our peoples and reiterated the willingness and commitment of Cuban doctors in that province to contribute, along with health personnel South African, in the fight against the pandemic.

The Hospital of Hope, located at the Cape Town International Convention Center, has a capacity of 862 beds, and will receive patients from that province affected by the virus, to be treated by South African staff and 18 Cuban doctors.

A total of 28 Cuban health professionals have been deployed to the Western Cape province, of the 217 who arrived in South Africa on 27April 27 to support national efforts against the pandemic.

This province is currently the most affected by the virus. 66% of the more than 40,000 positive cases in South Africa have been registered there as well as 77% of the total deaths in the country.
