Prominent diplomat Abelardo Moreno dies in Cuba

Havana, Apr 19 (Prensa Latina) The prominent Cuban diplomat Abelardo Moreno Fernández died in Havana at the age of 80.

At the time of his death, he was working as an advisor to Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.

Abelardo, as his colleagues called him, began his work in the Minrex in 1961, and had an ascending and meritorious career that led him to occupy various responsibilities in the internal and external services, until he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (2000-2019).

He fulfilled permanent missions in the representations of Cuba to the International Organizations based in Geneva, and to the United Nations Organization in New York, being Ambassador and Permanent Representative in the latter.

He represented his country in numerous international meetings and conducted complex negotiation processes, for which he was recognized and respected by his colleagues and colleagues around the world.

Among his contributions, his contribution to the success of the XIV NAM Summit, in 2006, and the II Summit of CELAC, in 2014, and Cuba's presidencies of those important mechanisms, which contributed to the international projection of this Caribbean nation and its leadership at the global and regional level, stand out.

Teacher of several generations of Cuban diplomats, he holds the Doctor Honoris Causa degree from the Higher Institute of International Relations “Raúl Roa García”, where he was Guest Professor.

He published books and articles on various topics of international relations, including “La negociación internacional: arte y ciencia del proceso negociador, 2021 and ”El Movimiento de Países No Alineados. Fundamentals, history and identity. Cuban Vision, 2023".
