Relations between Cuba and South Africa: at the level of the friends we are

Pretoria, South Africa, 20 June 2024.- Relations between Cuba and South Africa "have reached a high level, a level of excellence based on trust that allows us to address the different issues as the excellent friends that we are," said the member of the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and Vice President of the Republic, Salvador Valdés Mesa, to comrade Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC).

During his stay in South Africa, where he attended the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa, Valdés Mesa met with Mokonyane and other members of the National Executive Committee and its International Relations Sub Committee on Thursday afternoon.

The Cuban Vice president conveyed "warm greetings from the historic leadership and its continuity, from the Cuban party and government, to the leadership of the party and to the fighters and members of the ANC".

He expressed our country's gratitude for South Africa's constant solidarity and for the ANC's "firm support for the Cuban people's struggle against the blockade in the current critical situation resulting from the tightening of this policy".

He highlighted the positive vote of the Republic of South Africa and the interventions of its leaders in the United Nations General Assembly when the UN resolution to put an end to this genocidal measure of the US government is presented every year, as well as the support it gives to the resolution systematically adopted in the African Union against the blockade.

Valdés Mesa also explained to the ANC First Deputy Secretary General that for Cuba today, international solidarity is of paramount importance to demand that we be removed from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism, which the US government unilaterally and arbitrarily issues.
