Roseau, Dominica - August 20, 2024 - In a simple but moving ceremony held at the State House, the official residence of the President of Dominica, scholarships were awarded today to nine students from Dominica to pursue their university studies in Cuba. The ceremony was presided over by the Cuban Ambassador to Dominica, Miguel Fraga and the Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence of Dominica, Honorable Octavia Alfred. Also in attendance were the ambassadors of Venezuela and China, as well as family members of the selected students and the media.
Ambassador Fraga stressed that the cooperation between Dominica and Cuba was historic. He added that collaboration in the education sector dated back to 1979, long before the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, which was proof of the depth and strength of the ties between the two countries. The Cuban diplomat highlighted that more than 400 students from Dominica have graduated from Cuban institutions, enriching their education and contributing to the development of their country.
For her part, the Minister of Education, Octavia Alfred, underscored her gratitude to Cuba for its permanent support to Dominica, not only in education but also in health, and urged the young people to take advantage of this opportunity to better themselves and contribute to their homeland.
The ceremony concluded with the official handing over of the documentation certifying the scholarship to each student, who expressed their deep gratitude and enthusiasm.
