Scientific exchange contributes to Cuban capabilities in radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine.

In a fruitful meeting with Cuban scientist Pilar Oropesa Verdecia, from the Isotope Centre (CENTIS), we learned about her current scientific visit to the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in London until 14 June, as part of a technical assistance project sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a scientific relationship that dates back to the early 1990s, particularly in the training of specialists in radiopharmacy and radiation metrology.

During her stay at the NPL, a leading British institution in metrology, the researcher dedicated to this area of science is participating in an academic exchange focused on the development of software for radioactivity measurements. Her work focuses on the calibration of isotope systems for the accurate quantification of radioactivity in radiopharmaceuticals, with the aim of contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer through nuclear medicine.

This type of measurement allows for more accurate determination of the radiation dose a patient receives during therapeutic treatments, optimising their effectiveness and safety.

The academic exchange strengthens capabilities in the field of molecular medicine and directly contributes to the research that Pilar Oropesa and her team are conducting at CENTIS, an institution dedicated to isotope production and scientific and technical advancement in this strategic field for health.
