Canberra, August 19, 2026. As part of the 21st Latin American Film Festival (LAFF), the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Australia presented the film Habanastation at a screening held at the Kambri Theatre of the Australian National University (ANU). The screening was part of the festival's official program, which each year brings the cultural, artistic, and cinematic richness of Latin America to Australian audiences.
The evening brought together members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Canberra, representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), students, and numerous friends of Cuba. The audience's response reflected the growing interest in Latin American cinema and the ability of our productions to resonate with diverse audiences. Habanastation, with its sensitive portrayal of friendship, inequality, and daily life in Havana, offered a unique opportunity to showcase the authenticity and creativity of contemporary Cuban cinema.
The festival, which opened on August 11, is one of the most important Latin American cultural initiatives in Australia and attracts thousands of viewers each year. After its screenings in Canberra, the LAFF will continue its tour to other cities across the country—including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Wollongong—so that audiences throughout Australia can appreciate the diversity and talent of cinema from our region.
