Pretoria, April 23, 2019.- Under the theme "Unity, Commitment and Victory", the 21st Congress of the Confederation of Cuban Workers (CTC) is holding sessions in Havana from April 20 to 24. 1200 national delegates and 52 foreign delegates from 30 trade union organizations participate in the congress.
South Africa is among the countries represented in the meeting with a first-level delegation headed by Zingiswa Losi, president of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), and union organizations such as the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU), the National Health Education & Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and the Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU).
Among the key issues on the agenda of the important event are issues related to the Cuban economic-social model, policies approved with an impact on the country's work development, the current employment and salary policy, among others. For the first time, workers of all kinds of non-state management are represented.
The Congress takes place days after the announcement of the new escalation of US aggressions against Cuba, which includes the threat of activation of the Helms-Burton Act in order to intensify the economic blockade against Cuba; on this, firm statements of rejection were issued.
