Bloemfontein, July 25, 2026 — South Africans and Cubans celebrated in solidarity the 73rd anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, at a moving ceremony held beside the statue of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz in the city of Bloemfontein, Free State province. The commemoration brought together representatives of the district SACP, officials from the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in South Africa, members of the Cuban community in the country and friends of Cuba, who reaffirmed their commitment to the ideals of social justice, sovereignty and internationalism.
Among those present, the participation of Comrade Pat Horn, a member of the Central Committee and the Political Bureau of the South African Communist Party (SACP), stood out; in her speech, she paid tribute to the legacy of Fidel Castro Ruz and the historic example set by the Cuban Revolution.
During the event, participants conveyed messages of support for Cuba during these difficult times, marked by the intensification of the blockade and other economic pressures, and expressed their conviction that the South African people will always stand by Cuba. They also emphasized that the solidarity between the two peoples is not circumstantial, but the result of a historic friendship forged in the common struggle against apartheid and in the shared defense of the sovereignty and dignity of peoples.
