Pretoria, 25 September 2026. — The Cuban Embassy in South Africa expresses its gratitude for the strong words spoken by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, the Honourable Ronald Lamola, during the General Debate of the High-Level Segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, held on 24 September in New York.
In his address, the South African Foreign Minister reiterated South Africa’s call for the immediate lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, and emphasised that unilateral coercive measures not only harm the Cuban people, but also affect third countries that maintain legitimate relations with the island.
He also condemned the inclusion of Cuba on the list of so-called state sponsors of terrorism, an unfounded decision that exacerbates the impact of the blockade and harms economic and social actors beyond Cuba’s borders.
Cuba recognises and deeply appreciates South Africa’s enduring solidarity, based on a historic relationship of friendship, mutual respect and a shared struggle for the self-determination of peoples.
